What Is The Best Smokeless Coal?
Choice is, of course, nearly always considered a good thing. But sometimes too much choice can be intimidating, even unnecessary – after all, who in life really has the time or inclination to weigh up the varying benefits of different types of dishcloths or bin bags?
When it comes to home heating and smokeless coals, there’s also plenty of choice – and again, some might even say too much choice. But there is a very good reason for that, because different types of smokeless coal have their own very real benefits, some of which work best for different appliances.
And while it’s hard to get worked up or excited by discovering the right dishcloth or bin bag, what could be more important than finding the perfect fuel to keep you warm, cosy and happy during the cold winter months?
Here’s our guide to what we think are the best smokeless coals we sell in a few key categories.
Which smokeless coal gives off the best heat?
You have to wonder why we stuck with house coal for so long, because pretty much all the smokeless alternatives burn hotter (and longer!). House coal could get up to about 900ºC – not too dissimilar to some firewood – but anthracite can reach a very impressive 1,925ºC under the right circumstances. We sell anthracite in a range of forms that can be used in multi-fuel stoves, gravity-fed boilers and other closed appliances
Which smokeless coal burns the longest?
Once you’ve settled down to enjoy your fire, the last thing you want to be doing is getting up
every half hour to top up your fuel, so something with a long burn time – that just keeps on
going once you’ve got it started – is a must for many people. Homefire smokeless coal burns
for 40% longer than traditional house coal, and is equally at home in a multi-fuel stove or on
an open fire. And, of course, by burning for so much longer, you’re also getting heat for
longer, which makes using this quality smokeless coal a win-win situation.
Which smokeless coal offers the best value?
We’re going to take a punt here, because this one is still new to our range, but we already
have good vibes about Cosyglo. It’s been one of the most popular solid fuels in Ireland for
many years and is now starting to make a positive impact here in the UK as well. It scores
well in terms of the heat that it produces and leaves very little ash afterwards for you to have
to clean up, but just as important for many people, it’s also a very affordable option.
What is the best performing smokeless coal?
When it comes to picking a smokeless coal that scores well across all categories, it’s hard to
look beyond Homefire E-coal 50. It burns 38% hotter than traditional house coal, and
produces 80% less smoke and 40% less carbon dioxide. If that weren’t enough, it’s also
made out of 50% olive stones – natural wastage from olive oil production – which makes it
probably the most environmentally friendly smokeless coal of all as well.
So, there you have it. Of course, all the smokeless coals we sell are of exceptional quality and all offer the eco-friendly clean burn that means they can be used right across the UK.
