What are the benefits of using smokeless coal?

The smoke that used to be generated by traditional house coal was bad for the environment, could cause damage to chimneys and flues, and wasn’t great for people’s health either. That’s why its sale for domestic use was eventually banned in May 2023. Today’s smokeless coal is safe to use anywhere in the UK, because it produces considerably less of those harmful pollutants. If that weren’t enough, modern smokeless coals also generally burn hotter and longer than traditional house coal, as well as producing less ash. That means having a coal fire involves a lot less labour than it used to!
Does smokeless coal produce soot?

That in turn means that your appliance should work more efficiently and use less coal to heat your homes. So smokeless coals aren’t just good for the environment and your appliance – they’re good for your pocket as well!
What’s the best smokeless coal for open fires?

Many of our smokeless coals can be used on open fires – this information will usually be clearly marked on the packaging and we have also mentioned within the descriptions on this website which of our products can be used for which applications. Which will be best for you will depend on what you’re looking for, whether that’s a longer burn, a higher heat, less ash or the most eco-friendly possible option (or the best combination of all these!). How long does smokeless coal take to dry?

Because our smokeless coal is delivered in sealed bags, there is a chance of some dampness being trapped inside. It’s therefore a good idea to open the bag at least a couple of days before you intend to use it, so that the air has a chance to get in and dry it out properly. This will make sure that your coal burns at its most efficient level to give you more heat for your money. Before you do come to use your coal, make sure it’s stored somewhere dry, cool and out of direct sunlight.
What are the disadvantages of smokeless coal?

The upfront cost for smokeless coal is usually higher than some other options, but the more efficient heat it produces often more than makes up for that in the long run.Meanwhile, what soot it produces can be more acidic – and therefore more corrosive – than the soot you get from wood. That means you have to make sure your chimney is cleaned and swept regularly to keep it in good condition.
Why is my smokeless coal not getting hot?

In order to work properly, coal needs airflow from below. To make sure the air is getting to your coals so that they work most efficiently, you should clean out the grate and ashpan before or after each fire. It might also be the case that your flue needs cleaning. Nor will coal burn well if you mix it with wood – this is because coal needs air from below to burn properly, while wood needs it from above – so combining them in one fire means you won’t get the best from either. A few bits of kindling at the start to get it going is fine, but otherwise keep your solid fuels separate.
